Hawai'i Green Growth set ambitious targets in the areas of clean energy, local food, natural resource management, waste reduction, smart sustainable communities and green workforce to build a more secure, sustainable and resilient economy for Hawai'i by 2030.
HGG 2030 Target: Green Workforce & Education
Increase local green jobs and education to implement these targets
2030 Target Background
Hawai'i Green Growth members developed this target to make a clear commitment to create local green jobs and provide essential training and education programs so achieving these targets also strengthens our communities and economy. Hawai'i Green Growth is working with the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR) and the University of Hawai'i (UH) to further develop measureable green workforce and education sub-targets.
Leadership in Green Workforce Development
Hawai'i Green Growth's work in green workforce development is guided by DLIR, UH, Kupu Hawai'i, Agricultural Leadership Foundation and Hau'oli Mau Loa Foundation. Related guidance on business engagement and economic development is provided by Enterprise Honolulu, Kamehameha Schools, Kyo-Ya Hotels & Resorts, Starwood Hotels, Ulupono Initiative and the Hawai'i Tourism Authority.
Measuring Progress
To ensure the State of Hawai'i is reaching its Green Workforce target, stakeholders are beginning to develop indicators that track Hawai'i's progress.
- DLIR completed Hawai'i's first Green Workforce Baseline Assessment in December 2010.
- In 2012, the UH Economic Research Organization (UHERO) supplemented this report with Foundations for Hawai'i's Green Economy: Economic Trends in Hawai'i Agriculture, Energy, and Natural Resource Management. The UHERO report was co-sponsored by Hau'oli Mau Loa Foundation, The Nature Conservancy and Hawai'i Green Growth.
HGG's Sustainability Measures Start-Up Project is working with these partners, the Counties and others statewide to agree on a credible set of practical, public statewide sustainability indicators to inform decision-makers and the public on progress on our six sustainability targets.
